200 words, again (writing a novel in Drabbles was a silly idea)
“What kind of tests?” Rachel asked.
“Well, we take the annual physical just like everyone does, but it also includes balance and coordination tests. And after 65, we take a comprehensive cognitive test every six months, to see how our wit and memory works and to detect deterioration.”
“And where do you take these tests?”
“We have our own state-of-the-art medical facility in the Crystallization Center.”
“You have your own doctors here?”
“Of course, some of the best in the world. In fact, of the five remaining founding members, four are practicing medical doctors: a neuroscientist, a surgeon, an oncologist, and a clinical psychologist. They are also training other doctors to continue their work when they are done.”
“Do you have the health insurance to cover the tests?”
“No need, the community covers all our medical expenses.”
“But having the state-of-the-art medical facility would require lots of money, wouldn’t it?”
“Oh, we have no shortage of money for healthcare, dear. This is our priority here.”
“Hmm, can I take those tests, you think?”
“I’m sure that can be arranged. Just ask Laura.”
“Seems like Laura runs a lot of things here.”
“She sure does. She’s the Crystal Banaba chief manager.”

Linda smiled at Rachel understandingly. “I know it’s hard to accept, when you are as young and full of life as you are, dear,” she said. “But believe me, we old people know when our bodies start failing and torturing us with pains and aches. Many have no option of ending the misery on their terms. I’m glad we have this option here.”

I'm thirty-one and orbiting the same few mistakes like they're landmarks. London is already awake before I am (or before I've slept) - sirens somewhere far enough to ignore, buses sighing at stops, people moving with purpose I can't quite borrow. I lie there for a bit, tasting last night at the back of my throat, trying to remember if I meant to drink that much or if it just...happened again.
