Teen Missing Since 1984 Found Skeletonised At Classmate's Home

A tragic end to a decades-old search...

By MatesanzPublished about 13 hours ago 3 min read

Just after 2pm on 26th July 1984, 16 year old Diego Fernández Lima of Buenos Aires, Argentina, said goodbye to his mother—never knowing it would be the last time, as he headed over to a friend’s house.

By that evening, however, Diego had still not returned, and his parents’ concern quickly grew into alarm. For two days, they searched desperately with no trace of him before finally reporting his disappearance to the police.

Their fears were met with indifference. Officers dismissed the case, suggesting the teenager had likely run away and would return soon. He never did.

The case went cold, and more than four decades passed without answers. Then, in May 2025, a group of workmen began renovations at a property on Congreso Street in the city, which involved digging up the backyard.

What they uncovered was chilling—something that would finally bring the decades-old mystery to an end. Buried just 60 centimetres below the surface were human skeletal remains.

Fragments found with the body

The discovery quickly drew widespread media attention, largely because the home had once belonged to Argentine rock musician Gustavo Cerati, who lived there in the early 2000s.

Buried alongside the body were several haunting clues: a Casio calculator watch, a school tie, and fragments of clothing dating back to the 1980s. Forensic examination revealed the remains belonged to a male between 14 and 19 years old.

The bones told a far darker story. The victim had been stabbed multiple times in the back, and markings on the hips and upper limbs suggested a failed attempt to dismember the body—evidence of a brutal and deeply disturbing attack.

As news of the discovery spread across the country, police received a call from an unexpected source—Diego Fernández Lima’s nephew, who believed the remains might belong to his long-missing uncle.

Investigators soon collected a blood sample from Diego’s mother, and through genetic analysis, they were able to confirm the devastating truth: the remains were indeed those of Diego.

Tragically, in the years following Diego’s disappearance, his father died in an accident while searching for his son. His mother, who never gave up hope, remained in the same home for decades—now 87 years old—keeping Diego’s room untouched, waiting for the day he might return.

With the case now confirmed as a homicide, investigators turned their attention to the property’s past occupants at the time of Diego’s disappearance—and what they uncovered was deeply unsettling.

The property where Diego's skeletal remains were found

In 1984, the home was owned by the family of Diego’s classmate, Cristian Graf, now 56 years old. The two were not particularly close, but they shared a mutual interest in motorcycles. Diego owned a motorbike and would often take it to Cristian for repairs.

Suspect: Cristian Graf

Even before he emerged as the prime suspect, Cristian had inserted himself into the unfolding investigation. When news of the discovery broke, he approached the workers at the property and began offering his own theories.

He initially suggested the remains might belong to a priest, claiming a church had once stood on the site. Later, he proposed that the bones could have been “dumped” there by someone else—remarks that, in hindsight, appeared to deflect suspicion away from himself.

Cristian Graf

On 11th August 2025, Cristian, who is now married with four children, was approached for interview by reporters who tracked him down and asked him outright if he was responsible for his friend's death. Cristian simply shut the door in the reporter's face, with no effort to clear his name or even deny the allegations.

Just 2 days after this incident, a former classmate of Cristian and Diego came forward to report that he had suffered a sexual assault at the hands of Diego Fernández Lima before his murder. Adrián Farias claimed that he had been in the school bathroom when Diego had attempted to attack him from behind with clear intentions of pulling his pants down and forcing himself on him.

Adrián confessed that he had been too ashamed to ever come forward to report the incident but wanted to clarify that Cristian Graf was always a "quiet" person at school, whereas Diego he claimed, had been a "bully" who "made fun of others".

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to collect testimonies from Diego’s former classmates and acquaintances.

Tragically for his family, Argentine law sets a 20-year statute of limitations for homicide. This means that even if Diego’s killer is identified, they are unlikely to face legal consequences for the crime.
