I Opened My Dead Mother’s Phone…

Typing.....

By Sakuni BandaraPublished about 15 hours ago 3 min read

My mother died two years ago.

But, there was a ringing tone, so familiar, nostalgic...

At first, I thought my mind was playing games with me, but it was real.. But how?

The phone had been sitting in my drawer ever since the funeral, untouched, silent, holding memories I wasn’t ready to open.

But it kept ringing.

A slow, steady vibration.

My heart started beating faster as I walked toward the drawer.

No one had that number anymore. I made sure of it. After she died, I canceled her SIM, deleted her social media, and packed everything away. It was easier that way. Cleaner.

The phone lit up again.

Incoming Message: Mom

My hands froze. That wasn’t possible.

I slowly pulled the phone out. The screen was cracked near the corner, just like I remembered. Her wallpaper was still there ,a photo of us at the beach.

Mom: Are you okay?

My throat went dry. Someone must be pranking me. That had to be it.

I unlocked the phone with her old passcode , my birthday.

Sent just now.

Mom: I know you can see this. Please answer me.

My fingers trembled above the keyboard.

I typed.

Me: Who is this?

The reply came instantly.

Mom: It’s me.

A chill ran down my spine.

Me: My mom is dead.

There was a pause.......Then again.

Typing...

Stopped.

Typing...

Mom: I know.

My chest tightened. I dropped the phone onto my bed. This was insane. Some hacker. Some sick joke. I picked it up again, breathing heavily.

Me: Stop this. Who are you?

The reply came slower this time.

Mom: I need you to listen carefully. I don’t have much time. The air in the room suddenly felt heavy.

Mom: I’m not your mother.

My stomach twisted.

Mom: I’m you.

The phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor. I stared at the screen.

Mom: you will die in a car accident.

My vision blurred. No, this wasn’t real. My breathing became uneven, hands shaking uncontrollably.

Mom: I’m trying to save us.

Mom: Don’t drive tomorrow night. My heart stopped for a second.

Tomorrow night.

That was when I planned to visit my friend in the city. A long drive on the highway.

The phone vibrated again.

Mom: The truck won’t stop at the red light.

Tears rolled down my face.

Mom: You will die.

I sat on the floor, unable to move. The room felt silent. Too silent. My chest hurt.

Mom: Please don’t drive tomorrow night.

The screen suddenly flickered.

The battery dropped from 42% to 1% and the screen went black.

I sat there for a long time.

Thinking. Shaking. Crying.

The next day, my friend called me. “Are you coming tonight?” I looked at my car keys. Then at my mother’s phone.

Still dead. Still silent.

“I… I can’t come,” I said.

“Why?” he asked.

I swallowed. “I don’t feel safe driving tonight.”

There was a pause.

Then he laughed lightly. “Good choice,” he said.

“What?”

There was a pause.

Then he sighed. “Alright. Stay safe.” The call ended.

I sat on my bed, breathing slowly. Maybe the message was real.

Maybe I had just saved my own life.

For the first time in two years, I felt a little peace.

That night, I slept early.

No nightmares. No fear. Just silence.

At 3:17 AM, my phone rang. Not my mother’s phone.

My phone.

Unknown number.

I answered. “Hello?” There was heavy breathing on the other side. Then a weak voice.

My voice.

“Please… listen to me.” My heart froze.

“Who is this?” The voice was shaking.

“It’s you.” The room started spinning.

“No… no, this isn’t possible.” The voice cried softly.

“You weren’t supposed to stay home.”
