They say nothing in life is free. Corporations and multi-national companies have exploited that saying to uncomfortable extremes. Everything has a cost, even if that cost is hidden. You can’t watch a baseball game without paying for the channel, or for the gas it takes to drive to the field. Another saying has emerged: if something is for free, then you are the product. Digital footprints, personal data and algorithmic habits are sold to advertisers for everything you do online. It seems like nothing is truly free anymore. Which is fine, as long as it’s worth it.

With video games reaching higher and higher costs per their budget and movie theaters increasing ticket prices for mid-to-disappointing flops it seems like there’s no modern outlet that is worth its running cost. Even AI is losing its free trial and paid subscriptions for the top of the line models are rolling out. So for the AI RP chat enthusiasts, is the cost worth it to keep up the hobby?

Price of a Good Time

For any hobby, it’s important to gauge how much it’s worth to keep doing. Nothing is free, you need equipment to play sports, you need an internet bill to play games online - you need to buy the games and their console first, of course. Even watching the news isn’t free and it’s rarely a good time, albeit sometimes essential. Today everything is becoming a subscription, even things that used to have a one-time deal that gave out a lifetime's worth of content, or however long in your life you choose to put into it.

AI RP is the newest entertainment industry, and with that comes the inevitable monetization. Thankfully it’s fairly simple. Certain models use free trials and “Tokens” which allow you to generate more prompts after a daily, weekly or monthly free count has been expended. These can be bought in bundles, with each token being just a few cents, giving you multiple prompts worth at once. Or, you can pay a subscription, a set amount per month which can give you the equivalent or more tokens than it’s apparent worth to be a better deal. It’s worth it if you come back every day to use it as a pastime, not as much if you’re just interested in testing it out for a weekend or two.

The Median Model

It’s important to understand what you’re getting out of a subscription. Many AI RP platforms have different plans, each one geared towards different users based on their frequency and priced accordingly. A basic $5 a month plan gives a certain amount of tokens, which means interactions, in a given period. Enough to come back every day, but not quite enough to spend all of your allotted tokens at once. If you plan on having longer sessions, from half an hour a day to maybe an hour or two, you could upgrade to $9.99 a month.

Then there are the business models. These programs are for larger businesses using AI not for roleplay but as tools for massive data collection and organization. Google’s Gemini has a plan for upwards of $250 a month. No single person who wants to use AI for RP would think of setting this up unless they were using it to form their own independent platform for other people to subscribe to. This can help explain what the costs themselves are offsetting. Every model has to make sense, and that means having a reason behind the cost itself. Paying for the service and the server it runs off of are considered in the basic price for a minimal number of users.

Bells and Whistles

Paying for just the basics isn’t what a hobby is about, though. If you are considering a paid membership to do AI RP, you want more than just a simple connection. You want advanced parameter features, the ability to fine tune a chatbot’s personality and change it at your convenience. Maybe you want profiles, the ability to have more than one chatbot running at a time and interacting with each other. No one acting like a few different people, but different chatbots with unique parameters to enhance roleplay to a certain degree.

You want reliable backups and guarantees against deleting or altering the program once you have it set to your satisfaction. Free models will update and take away features, settings and entire personality traits on a regular basis, but a paid model can stick around as long as you keep your subscription going. If you want to take part in a hobby, you want an elevated experience. Anybody can pick up a stick and hit a rock and call it baseball, but if you buy a real ball and bat you’re getting something much better. AI RP follows those same rules. Pay enough to get what you want and you’ll get it, no extra strings attached.
