Daddy, I Know Your Secrets

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about 10 hours ago 1 min read

[Verse 1]

I keep receipts in my heart imprisoned beneath my ribcage

I've got Dates

I've got polaroids

I've got times

Daddy, I saw when your halo slipped

And you smiled like nothing happened

You called me the hurricane in your weather report

You blamed me

For the flood of misery spilling from your hands

While you hid matches behind your back

[Chorus]

I know your secrets

The ones that flicker when the room goes dark

I know your secrets

You paint me as the shadow

But I saw the darkness in your heart

You buried your truth in my name

Called it my fault

Called it my shame

The world is changing

And I know

And I know

And I know

I know your secrets

[Verse 2]

You rehearsed your lies in a cracked bathroom mirror

You Practiced

Being innocent

Being sure

Being right

While my face took every rumor like a bruise

You threw me under your speeding lies

You watched it

Roll over my spine

Then sent me sympathy texts at 9:09

(yeah)

[Chorus]

I know your secrets

The ones that flicker when the room goes dark

I know your secrets

You paint me as the shadow

But I saw the darkness in your heart

You buried your truth in my name

Called it my fault

Called it my shame

The world is changing

And I know

And I know

And I know

I know your secrets

[Bridge]

Daddy, so what happens when the ground gives way?

When every quiet friend has something to say

When the mask you wear starts peeling at the edges

And my silence stops protecting all your pledges

[Chorus]

I know your secrets

The ones that tremble when you hear my voice

I know your secrets

Every twisted little carefully made choice

You buried your truth in my name

But, baby the tide’s here

Washing off your stain

The world is changing

And I know

And I know

And I know (I know)

I know your secrets

I know I know I know I know I know
