The Best Dog In The World, Sheeba
1970-1983 My Best friend My Sheeba

The Best Dog In The World, Sheeba
Sheeba, wrapped in black and white,
a steady pulse, a grounded soul,
you walked beside my teenage years,
and made the broken moments whole.
Your ears stood high to catch each sound,
your eyes were deep with quiet care,
you watched the world without demand,
yet always knew when we were there.
No need for words, you understood,
the shift of mood, the change of tone,
you followed close through light and dark,
and made our loving house a home.
From nineteen seventy you came,
a small, bright life with patient grace,
you grew into a constant truth,
a calm that time could not erase.
Through childhood days and scattered paths,
through laughter sharp and hidden tears,
you never turned, you never left,
you held your ground through all those years.
Your paws knew every inch of earth,
each step was sure, each movement kind,
you carried loyalty like breath,
a rare and unwavering mind.
No grand display, no need to prove,
your love was simple, strong, and real,
a quiet bond that held us close,
a steady heart we all could feel.
And when the final day drew near,
no words could shape what we had lost,
just silence thick with memory,
and love that showed its endless cost.
Nineteen eighty three took you,
but not the truth of what you gave,
for time cannot undo a bond,
nor close the mark your presence made.
You are still there in softened light,
in every place we turn and see,
the best dog in the world, our Sheeba,
still walking on in memory.
Your family loved you like you where a queen. I you love back with every breath you took. My heart and my Mam and Dads broke in two the day cancer took you. Still miss you my darling girl. ♥️💔♥️

Loverly tribute, Marie. I don't think you ever get over the loss of a dog that is part of your life. I know I still think about our first Shih Tzu (Tai) that passed away from a massive and aggressive brain tumour. These lines really say a lot about how dogs think: "you watched the world without demand, yet always knew when we were there."
What a great poem of a dear friend. I too had a dog about these same years. 1970 I was six and got a new puppy named Pierre and I lost him about the same time for I graduated in '82 and had to say goodbye to my first best friend who also had cancer.
