Anykciai

The immaculately green village of Anykciai is located halfway between Kaunas and the Latvian border in the east. It offers a natural retreat balanced with some genuinely magnificent ecclesiastical buildings.

The red brick Basilica of Apostle Evangelist St. Matthew dominates the banks of the winding Sventoji River with its towering Gothic spires. It features some impressive stained glass pieces by the renowned artist Anorte Mackelaite.

During the summer you can go hiking along country trails.

In the winter, go skiing at the Kalitos Kalnas ski resort.

With its stunning backcountry mosaic of old-growth pine woods and lakes and riverways, Lithuania’s first national park, Aukštaitija National Park, is located in the northeastern part of the country. Enjoy recreation by Lake Tauragnas with woodland pathways and sights of deer.

The best spa town is the well-kept Druskininkai. Under Grand Duke Stanisław August Poniatowski, it was well-known as early as the 1600s. The town rose to fame in the 19th century due to Nicholas I of Russia's patronage.

It is the former residence of Lithuanian painter, composer, and writer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, whose life is chronicled in the museum.

The town of Kernave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is regarded as one of the Grand Duchy’s early medieval capitals and is believed to have seen its golden era boom in the 13th and 14th centuries, prior to the Teutonic Order’s onslaught destroying the keeps and defenses.

Visitors enjoy exploring the archaeological reserves lining the Nevis River, some dating back to the late Paleolithic Period.

Klaipeda is full of 800-year-old relics, which it uses to create a modern nightlife. Explore the Old Town with cobblestone streets and sculptures.

The Curonian Spit is a well-known beachfront strip.

One of the most sought-after travel destinations in Lithuania is Neringa, surrounded by a patchwork of lush pine forests, grasslands, rolling dunes, and sandy beaches winding along the Baltic Sea coast.

The entire Curonian Spit provides great hiking, biking, windsurfing, and fishing in the Curonian Lagoon.

You can see many galleries and artist workshops as well as the quaint cottage of German novelist and short story writer Thomas Mann.

The resort town known as the “Summer Capital," Palanga, became a resort in the late 19th century.

Visitors enjoy Palanga Beach.

See the “Sea Bridge," from which you can see wonderful sunsets.

There are many impressive summer villas here; among them, the prettiest is named Anapilis (World of the Dead).

Plateliai is the gateway to the Zemaitija National Park just a short distance from the Baltic Sea.

The renowned Hill of Crosses is located to the north of the town of Siauliai. The town has charming lanes, lined with trees, and a vibrant cafe culture. It dates back to the Soviet era.

Visit the Povilas Visinskis Square.

See the Hill of Crosses.

Just a quick day trip from the capital, Vilnius, the town of Trakai is known for its island castle. At one time it was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Visit Trakai Island Castle in Lake Galve, which is home to the museum of Lithuanian history.

On the mainland is the Peninsula Castle in ruins, but the yard has medieval wooden tools.

The Transfiguration of the Virgin Mary Church, dating to the 15th century, is among the oldest churches in Lithuania's smaller towns.

Take a detour and see the amazing Hill of Angels created in 2009 with a collection of wooden angel sculptures.
