Somers Moves onto Semifinals with 28-9 Defeat of Averill Park

Section One versus Section Two, the games all started close, but too much heigh, and too much hitting proved the difference.

John Jay Takes Section One Title
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons Click for all Fall Slideshows After defeating Ardsley in a five set marathon on Thursday November 7, John Jay won a berth in the finals at the Westchester County Center on Sunday, and Lakeland stood in their way. One versus six, the previous encounter betrayed the numbers. The first two sets to Lakeland, John Jay kept their heads up and swept the final three. So when John Jay pulled the reverse and won the first two, the same possibility had to creep in. But as usual, Coach Rizzotti stayed the course.

Somers Means Business in Comeback Win Over Harrison
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons Click for all fall slideshows Click for Sideline Shots On Friday November 8, Somers suited up for the semifinals against Harrison, and an 11th straight victory seemed pretty straight forward. But a few mistakes, and Harrison playing tough on both sides of the ball, a serious curve was thrown into the Tuskers' night. Down 6-0 to start the fourth quarter and facing a 4th and 17 from the Harrison 25, the Tuskers simply stayed on point.

But Ardsley won the next two, so Coach Tom Rizzotti offered some simple math to inspire his girls. “I asked them how many sets does it take to win a match,” he clarified, and with Ardsley still one shy, the Wolves returned with only addition on their minds.

At Bowdoin Park, Julia Duzynski did a pretty good job summing up some of the difficulties. “It’s running on rocks the entire time and my shoes kept slipping,” said the junior. But Duzynski remained in stride and will continue to do so even further north.

A pretty straight forward assumption, the bracket positions didn’t lie, but the three set sweep still produced some drama.

Please see tip, subscribe and pledge buttons Click for all fall slideshows On Monday November 4, John Jay hosted Tappan Zee in the quarterfinal round, and the goal of winning sectionals has some added juice this year. “We really want to win it for him and go all the way,” said Jaime Bartley-Cohen of Coach Rizzotti, who is retiring after the season. So a split after two games possibly signaled an unwanted early retirement but not for long.

But the Garnets weren’t counting, and it didn’t take long to set a tone that carried through to the end.

John Jay Closes the Book on another Successful Season

But a 2-0 loss spoiled the chance, and while another chapter won’t be written, Coach Debbi Walsh closed the book on this season with pride.
