Our First Pregnancy

The Beginning of Our Journey

By Kirsten MitchellPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

My husband and I found out we were pregnant on April 1, 2021, 4 weeks along! Finally, we are starting a family of our own after trying for a whole year! If we didn't become pregnant then we would have started on medications to help us along. On April 6th, 2021 was our first ultrasound to confirm our pregnancy, YAY! Fast forward to April 23rd, 2021 we had our second ultrasound and got to hear the baby's heartbeat and it was 161 beats per minute, our 3rd ultrasound was May 7th, 2021.

On Wednesday May 12, 2021 we had a little scare as I started to bleed a little bit...so we had an appointment on Thursday May 13, 2021 in the early morning hours and we were told everything was fine and that the baby still had a heartbeat and it was 155 beats per minute. So, I decided to go forward with a blood draw for the genetic screening to test the chromosomes of the baby and to find out what the gender of the baby will be. Fast forward to the evening hours on Thursday May 13th, I started bleeding heavier and we ended up in the ER for what we thought was a miscarriage but again we were told everything was fine and that the baby still had a heartbeat, which was 157 beats per minute and we were also told that this pregnancy was a threatened miscarriage.

So with that being said, I made another appointment on Friday May 14, 2021 to check on the baby and everything was fine at that appointment and the baby's heart rate was 169 bpm. Unfortunately that Friday afternoon we ended up in the ER again, but this time ended up losing the baby at 10 weeks and 4 days and we were surrounded by our immediate family who knew about the pregnancy. We've been lost for words and it was the hardest thing we have ever had to go through, but we will overcome this loss and eventually get our rainbow baby! We are so thankful for the family that has been with us throughout this rough time and thankful for the time they spent with us ( and through phone calls ) to help us through this loss.

We cherished the time we had with our little squishy and loved every moment of it. Shortly after the miscarriage happened we received our genetic testing results and all chromosomes were normal and confirmed we would have had a little girl. We would have had a little one here in December 2021, but God had other plans for us and everything happens for a reason. For reasons unknown, the baby wasn't meant to be here on Earth...the miscarriage happened 3 days ( 5 - 14 - 2021 ) before my Nanna's passing ( 5 - 17 - 2019 ), so a part of me believes she needed a baby to look after and so did my husband's Grandmothers. Our baby is being loved by all of our family in heaven! We love you, our little baby! Until we meet again! We decided that after the miscarriage that we would get a build a bear with our little angels heartbeat inside and it was the best decision that we ever made! Anytime that we want to hear our first little baby's heartbeat all we have to do is squeeze the bear and then the heartbeat would play; I tear up every time I hear it, but it is also the best sound ever!

Stay tuned for more about our journey to our rainbow baby!
