THE UNQUESTIONED SECRET
The school had a long vacation which happened to be a privilege for Monica and her friends to go to the pool. At the pool, the ladies had a whole lot of fun together. The bag fell to the ground. “Thank you”, she said to Julius sharply. “Hey I’m Julius; may I know your name please?” “I’m Monica”, she said, busy pressing her phone while some of her friends went to the pool to swim. Minutes after, she went to the pool to swim as she saw Julius capturing her. “Hey! Idiot, why would you take pictures of me without my consent”!? She asked angrily, smashing his phone on the floor. “Monica, I’m deeply sorry, I… I was just too afraid to come to meet you for your permission”, he said, begging her. Monica walked away and left the pool.

Always
*Mary was on her way home from her 2-week business trip which ended with a big Halloween party when she decided to stop by her grandmother's house for a visit. She pulled up to her grandmother’s house and knocked on her door. Greeting her at the door was a middle-aged woman wearing an all-black dress and dark brown hair kept in a low bun. Her skin was pale but she was very beautiful. She looked like she belonged in the Edwardian era. Mary wondered who the woman was and thought she was just dressed like that for Halloween.

Halloween Cancelled
Sweating profusely as I was gasping for air, I ran to hide behind a large oak tree at Widows Creek. I could barely see through the thick white fog surrounding me. From a distance I saw flashlights and heard voices headed near my direction. They were saying, “Ven Aqui!”, “come out girl there is nowhere to hide.” My hands were shaking, well everything was shaking for that matter. I looked around slowly to anticipate my next move. The glare from the flashlights had gotten closer and I could hear their footsteps in the grass. The leaves were crunching with their every step. My only choice was to make a run for it, hop over the wooded fence and run. To get Anywhere. I mean ANYWHERE away from this mob of people who were after me. Without any further hesitation I jetted off running. As fast as humanly possible. I had gotten over the fence and they were right behind me. I felt like I was losing then and then a gunshot rang off. At that instant I stopped. I never imagined my life ending this way. I turned around parlayed in fear. Once the mob caught up to me there were men, women, and some children holding shot guns, pitch forks, flashlight, lanterns, and machetes. One of the men from the mob ran towards me, as I covered my head, he raised his machete in the air and…

Hunting Boots
The storm outside was brutal. The small town’s roads were hardly cared for this time of year, even though it was inevitable that snow would roll in ‘bout now. Cassie couldn’t see the street outside the window, the single working lightbulb above the two gas pumps flickered from the cold snap that had swept over the day. A morning fog had turned to sleet which turned to powder. She was bored. All of her friends had headed into the city for a concert, they were probably in cute outfits, drinking draft beer, swaying to the slow strum of a guitar. And here she was, snowed in overnight in the station with her hardback novel and barely two bars of signal. At least the pay was decent.

The Mirror Below
She stood at the edge of the water, her toes slowly sinking on the gravel and sand, grounding her feet on solid land for the last time. She exhales, emptying her lungs completely, before inhaling rapidly, filling her lungs with new air. She kicks off, throwing a foot full of sand, as she plunges into the cold waters of the lake. The drop-off falls steep and deep, allowing her to dive safely. Behind her, a wisp of fog swirls behind her, then covers the area in which she plunged.

An early Autumn morning
Before the first rays of sun rise above the horizon in the distance, I have left the front door of my home, and begin treading through the cover of the night. At this hour, with not a soul in sight — not even the birds chirping to an old-fashioned, 'good morning’— I’m left alone with just the sound of my thoughts, which drown out all other noise...
