Lake Life
When the grey 2007 GMC Envoy hit a bump in the road, 16-year-old Nora Richardson woke from the passenger side. Her mother, Annie, looked like she’d fall over at any moment. Her younger brother, 10, was sound asleep in the back seat with his handheld gaming system on his chest. As they crept up the driveway, Nora zipped up her black ankle boots. Although it was nearly midnight, she could see her Aunt Beverly in the window, she must’ve heard their vehicle approaching.

A Test of Courage
Being young in a small town should be a crime. There is nothing to do all day except for maybe chill with your friends. No mall, no arcades, not even a shop really outside of the grocery store. If you wanted any real entertainment you had to drive thirty miles to the east. So what's a small town boy to do when he has a crush on the prettiest girl in school who doesn't even notice him? Feats of strength, wisdom, or courage are the answer of course. Problem is I'm not very strong, my grades are mediocre at best, and well just between you and me I'm very much a coward. I still call my parents in to deal with tiny spiders. But I can at least pretend to be brave and so courage was what I decided to go with.

The River Itself
I used to love water. Swam in it, boated on it, admired sun diamonds dancing on its surface, took baths in it. Until last week. Now I can barely bring a glass of water to my lips, allow that slippery liquid to slide into my mouth and down my throat, invite it inside of me, swallow. I shudder and tense at the very thought, and have to force myself to drink water to survive. I've even started carrying a reusable straw with me, drinking everything through that! As if that could stop the water. I know better, after what I saw, what I lived through, but we all have our little delusions to help us cope with this life. Allow me mine. It keeps the 'in' out of my sanity.

Haunted Home
I was a new home owner. At the age of twenty seven this was probably the biggest thing to ever happen to me. No mortgage either. A full on home owner. I had gotten it for super cheap because apparently the previous owner had some sort of psychotic breakdown and then died in the front lawn from a heart attack. He had been screaming something about ghosts according to the realtor. I figured I would buy some sage, call my spiritual friend over, maybe hire a professional to cleanse the house. It's not that I'm scared of ghosts but I'd rather not live with one either.

Sleeping By the Willow Tree
I started going to the river when I first moved to this house a year ago, mainly it was because of the lovely weeping willow that sat next to the water. I would sit under that tree and look out into the river as it flowed, I would admire the beautiful branches and leaves that acted like a veil. On a good season, the branches would be low enough to touch the surface of the water. The river always gave me the most soothing feelings both when I watch it and when I swim in it, and with the water being so clear I can watch the fish and other creatures below the surface without intruding. The water feels like another world that I have yet to explore fully.
