The Empress of Evil
My family loves animals. Over the years, we've had just about every pet there is. From parakeets to fire belly toads, mice to guinea pigs, rabbits to hamsters…we’ve had them all. We raised chickens in the backyard for nine nears, beloved pets that happened to gift us with delicious eggs. We’ve raised gerbils, turtles, fish, one neurotic dog who lived for nearly 17 years...and cats. Cats are the best, the one animal I can't imagine living without.

My Voyager Cat Crew
April 2020 After my dear old dog and cat died from illness in late winter, I decided that I wouldn't go looking for a pet. Instead, I would simply wait and see what happenstance would bring me. I decided on certain rules. My pet would need to be under 30 lbs so that I could lift him/her easily in a medical emergency. I would probably have a cat so any dog I might adopt must get along well with small animals.

The Voyager and the Demi god
In 2016 I was at work when a manager pulled me aside to ask if I was doing alright. I was reluctant to admit how badly my mental health was suffering, and how hard it had become to maintain the facade that I was operating at 100% all of the time. But she could tell, and so could my coworkers. At the time I was living and working in Central Florida, in a place where people come from all over the world to visit. I was truly living everyone else’s dream, and people I knew who didn’t work with me never missed an opportunity to tell me so, meanwhile behind the scenes, my own life felt like a nightmare. This brought on an immense sense of guilt and shame, as though because of my situation, I wasn’t allowed to feel depressed, or because of the nature of my job, I shouldn’t experience anxiety. By the end of our conversation, I was being driven by two large police officers to a mental health facility nearby for a mandatory 5 day observation where I took part in group and individual therapy, in a safe and understanding environment.

Little Joey and Khloe
Not one to gush too much usually, but these are my two adorable little furball additions to the family, Joey (the tabby on the left in the above photo) and Khloe (long hair, could be part Maine Coon on the right in the above photo). Joey is technically my mom's birthday present from my sister-in-law circa September 2017, while Khloe was rescued quite literally off the street in November of 2019. Both of them are absolutely adored and have brought a lot of life into the household.

How to Turn Your Man into a Cat Lord
You probably guessed from the title that I’m an unapologetic cat person, even though I come from a culture that has a strong preference for dogs. Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs and animals well enough, but I guess I’ve oftentimes felt an affinity for the underdog (or should it be undercat?). Growing up, I frequently managed to adopt stray cats that “followed” me home, much to my mother’s annoyance. She always came around though, despite raising us with the strictness of a drill sergeant. Once, my cat Bubba was sleeping ON her bed pillow, and I tried to shoo her away before my mother caught her (yes, Bubba was a she. I named her after my favorite teddy bear). I was too late, but much to my surprise, my mother said “Leave her alone mija, she’s not bothering anyone.” That’s when I knew my mother had come around to loving (or at least tolerating) my cats.
