The Outbreak - Chapter 4
My eyes fall open to the filtered brightness of the summer sun through the thick off-white curtains; I watch dust float through the rays of light that manage to penetrate them. The warmth of Jordan's arm across my chest and hair against my neck shoots an ecstasy through my body. The stinging in my eyes has dramatically subsided since the storm; the red haze which glazed my vision is gone entirely. A fragrance so sweet is doing backflips in my nose in the form of whatever product Jordan used in his hair; not taking away from the discordant sight of his facial abrasions. Distracted by the beauty of the moment, I hear birds outside singing their songs as if nothing's even happening. I hear a shuffle from beside me and turn my head to be immediately met with his lips on mine whilst he holds my face with his hand. We part.

Fun Gone Awry
Dear Journal, As I write this, the walls in this cell feel like it's closing in on me. I am just not used to living in such tight quarters. A prisoner across from my jail cell is swaying side to side, saying things like she is going to rip my throat out with a spoon, then shit in its hole. Another one laughs. She is in the cell next to mine. I hear her whispering loud enough that only I can hear her. She says, "I will do much worse, you cunt. I will pull out each hair on your head so slowly, you will beg for death. Then I will turn you inside out from your pussy." I've had similar things said to me. My reputation has slowly grown over the last three months, each person only seeing what they want to see and not what I want them to hear. I know that I deserve to be here. I have thought about it since these doors shut the first day. It haunts my dreams each night and sets the mood for my days here. I see a counselor weekly to talk about the trauma. It's helping, but at the same time it's not. My counselor says that I should write it all down. She said that if I did that, I might be able to come to grips with it, maybe even forgive myself. So, here it goes...

Unforgettable Nightmares
We all have those kinds of dreams and nightmares we can't forget. Now those ones that you wake up from and hear yourself catch your breath and shoot straight up from—those may stick with you for life. Some of those nightmares can continue when you're awake. Now some very vivid and descriptive nightmares I've had I can still remember from about four years back, and they are quite scary. One night it was when I was working at an amusement park so it happened to be Disney at that time. I was a night guard on watch with a big screen in front of me.

A Common Man's View: 'Hush'
Currently trending in Netflix's horror scene is a delightful little flick called Hush. Mike Flanagan's 2016 slasher has come across my path a few times over the past year, and I vehemently avoided it, like I do most shadows lurking in my oft-empty house. I wish I had done a bit more research before turning it away, I always know a Blumhouse film is sure to enthrall me.

My Top Favorite Horror Films Coming Out This Year
The first on my list is going to be Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare that comes out this April. This film really caught my attention with just the trailer alone. It starts off with a group of people playing the truth or dare game. The game is suddenly stopped when a guy tells the truth that he only wants to be around one of the girls to play and get rid of the game. He considers the game a curse and he’s ready to be left alone. The key is to tell the truth and do the dare. If you don’t, you die. There is no escaping this game, and it only ends when all the players are dead. While this won’t be the scariest film of the year, I think the concept is kind of cool. Yes, I’ve seen something similar, but the aesthetic of the “players,” once they’re involved in the game, is something I’m looking forward to as well.

I raise my blood-soaked hand to brush the hair out of my face as the might of dusty wind fights against me; each step I take in this wind feels like a thousand steps on broken glass. As I lift my head up, I'm forced to wince when I'm met with the embrace of sand entwining itself around me. I can taste the gravel, like a childhood memory of falling off your bike into the sandpit face first. The whistle can be heard for miles over the vast emptiness of rural Arizona. I've lost track of how long we've been walking for, or even how far we've gone. It doesn't matter now.

Memories of the night before replayed over and over again as she tried to find yet another way out of this marriage. Rayne didn't seem much happier, though she would be marrying Marrow, at least that was her father's plan. They had come up with one of their own. Neither woman was happy with the suitor she had been betrothed to, so Rayne had come up with a way for herself to be happy at least.

Something Happened Out There...
They were circling the cabin again. Out here in the woods, isolated from the noise pollution and general electric hum emanating from every street lamp and central air system of modern life, every footstep sounds like the hoof of a bull tamping the dust. They weren't exactly trying to hide their presence; for almost a week They relentlessly pressured Jessica, escalating their sensory assaults sporadically. This late in the game she had abandoned her initial "heroic" attempt to ignore her emotions and her memories. Every night of this so far had started the same way, but the days were always different. It was always worst when the sun was up.
