A Tale of Two Cats
One night around 10pm in July I was traveling home from Malanda, I go up every week to perform in a large band you see. On my return home I turned on my car's heater, being July in Australia, it gets very cold up in the hills. Upon my descent down the range like road I noticed a large cardboard box on the side of the road, being a respectable person towards nature I dislike litter and decided to pull over and pick it up. Upon stopping and getting out of my car I could hear the faint meowing of kittens, sadly to my horror when opening the abandoned box, I discovered a litter of kittens, 7 in total. They were frozen solid and shaking, a few were asleep and I feared the worst. I picked up the box and put it on my front seat, blasting the heater onto them. The whole drive home I checked on them, making sure that they were ok and getting enough heat.

Mittens
In April of 2020, my elderly Persian cat had to be put down because of all the pain he was in from not functioning anymore. For years, he was loved by my whole family, coming to us when my grandmother became too old to take care of him anymore. 2020 was already a rough year, but on top of Sonny's passing, the whole house was down. Our two-year-old rescue, Blinky, who we had found at about six weeks old abandoned in the middle of an intersection, was lonely and depressed with his grumpy friend now gone. Blinky would wander the house for Sonny before settling to watch the birds by himself.

You call Chris a little after 2pm. Hey, come meet me at Tricia’s, there’s a dog that needs our help. Chris shows up quicker than he’s ever shown up after a call. He must have raced across town. You and Tricia are in her back yard, looking through a gap in the chain-linked fence.

Binx and I: A "Tail" of Destiny
I always considered myself an animal lover, but never a cat person. The only cats I knew were my aunt’s, which were always hiding unless it was dinner time. I never had a cat growing up, only dogs because my father was allergic. I’m allergic, too—to both dogs and cats—but I could never live without a dog so I have simply come to terms with the fact that I will forever be on allergy medication. At one point, we seemed to be rivaling Noah’s Arc—my family had two dogs, two gerbils, two frogs, and two fish. I always considered myself an animal lover, but when it came down to the old cat vs dog debate, my answer was simple: dog. I have always been a dog lover. I still am. Yet I somehow ended up with a cat whom I absolutely adore and love with every beating crevice of my heart.

Does Your Cat Do This Too?
Bella was one of two kittens in a cardboard box in the park. Her sister, a tabby I named Stella, was the cat I chose, but I knew they were both coming home with me the minute I held Bella. I was a sucker, but it didn't matter. I had room in my heart for both. Having lost my 13-year-old cat, I was finally ready for a new pet, and I just knew that two would be a whole different experience.

For: RoseGold&Kesan
For: Rose & Kesan (My Two Cat Sons) I will always love and appreciate the both of you too. My little sister, who is actually is my best-friend, had took in a stray cat who had kittens and she kept one of those kittens. I wanted a cat, since my son had passed away and I was suffering really horrible from depression. So, my little sister cat who I called Mama, had her third litter of kittens, and my sister already had two from her second litter. My little sister is an animal lover, no matter what she says, she will say “I am not taking in no more animals,” and next thing you know, she will be telling you why she had to bring the cat or dog home. I always laugh, as her mom gets on her, but we love her so much that we all will someway or somehow, take care of whatever animal that she had brought home.

Two Tails
Earlier this year my uncle passed away. Talk about a terrible way to start the year. For the sake of identity, let's refer to him as Uncle Steve. Anyway, he passed away in Mexico while he was with his brother, who we'll call Uncle Josue. They both were caring for my grandmother who has been ill ever since my grandfather died a few years ago. His death hurt her so that she has had a literal weak heart ever since. So she has been in and out of hospitals for years, with my two uncles aiding her.

The Station 57 Cat. Third Place in Stray to Stay Challenge. Top Story - April 2021.
There was a “meow” coming from somewhere in front of our station. We heard it at random intervals, desperate but also elusive. Two of the Emergency Medical Technicians I work with helped me canvas the area, using whatever meat products we could find in our break room refrigerator as bait. We are situated in a busy area of Brooklyn and there are many feral cats nearby, but none had ever called out to us before.
