Monsters
Your body kind of sways to the sound of music heard in the distance as you clutch your gun closer hoping the twitters in the shadows heard down the alleys to each side of you aren’t monsters stalking you for dinner. I know what it is to fear those sounds that are echoes of memories from when you were little and hiding under the covers in mommy and daddy’s room because there were always skittering, twittering, scratching noises all around your room. Sounds that ignited into life the second the night light ran out of juice after your parents turned off the big lights for bedtime.

A Broken Record
Have you ever felt like a problem? Like, you never mattered to anyone in your life? They always tell me to keep my chin up and that it couldn't get any worse. Every time I try to talk to them about my problems, they'll call me a broken record. Always saying that I repeat myself, that my sadness and fears are in my imagination. To them, depression isn't a disease. No, it's a made-up thing that people like me use to get out of doing things. Whenever one of my spells hit, my mother will call into my room saying: "Get up, Dean! I know you're faking!" Truth is, I'm not. You can't fake this, depression isn't easy to fake. When I don't want to get out of bed most days, my dad will barge in and drag me out of bed and onto the cold floor. He says I'm too young to be depressed, he always tells me that sixteen-year-olds pretend to be depressed so they can get out of going to school or to get out of chores.

Survival Journal Entry 1
Today, the walls fell. There was a horde of zombies that drifted in from the East. We have never had anything come from that direction, but I guess they have been forced to migrate further for food. We lost 12 people but it could have been much, much worse. We are still not spread too thin, but so many people are mourning, I have no idea how long it will take to bounce back but it better be fast. The wall repairs will take a week on their own so we need to get started asap.

Tangerine Lights
From the dim under the bathroom door she could only be certain of one thing. The tangerine light. She curled in the corner of that bathroom every night, ready. Ready for what, she wasn’t sure. But she curled her hands into balls and sat on them and waited, knowing the one thing she was sure about the tangerine lights. The only essence of color that wiggled its way into that bathroom, splashing all over the tile floor. She was shivering. The tile looked warm from the light but was cold and uninviting, hostile to the touch. The closer she moved toward the door the more of her exposed skin brushed the tile, raising the hairs on her neck.
